Deuteronomy 7 – A God you can depend on…

Good evening y’all. Today we are studying Deuteronomy chapter 7 ๐Ÿ™‚

Be Blessed ๐Ÿ™‚

As i started reading the chapter, the first thing that caught my attention was the use of the phrase; “When the lord your GOD…“. It suddenly occurred to me that our God is a God of certainty; whatever He says will surely happen. It might tarry a bit in our own eyes, but it will surely come to pass.

It might seem like that promise is delaying or seems impossible, I believe God wants to remind us today that it will surely come to pass. Its a matter of WHEN and not IF. GOD will surely bring to pass all that He has spoken and promised concerning us. Num 23: 19 says He is not a man that He should lie…..

I also noticed God is the one who will deliver their enemies into their hands and not them. Same applies to us, God is the one who will do the fighting, we don’t need to worry. All we need to do is to keep believing, trusting and obeying Him and i believe without a shadow of doubt that God will come through for us.

God told the Israelites to completely destroy the foreign nations and their Gods. God didn’t want them to get polluted or distracted by the way of life of the foreign nations. He knew they were a easily led astray bunch of people ๐Ÿ™‚ so He tells them in verse 2-3 to make sure they completely destroy all.

When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters” (V2-3 NLT)

How can we apply this verses to our lives today? I believe God is calling us to a place of complete surrender; a place where we have completely let go of all the things we hold in higher esteem than God; a place where we are completely sold out to God, not looking elsewhere for satisfaction but only unto God.

And why does God require this from us? V4 tells us..

“For they will lead your children away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and he will quickly destroy you” (NLT)

Failure to get rid of all that is not godly in our lives will get us in trouble. Before we know it, our hearts are being drawn away to ungodly things. This is why Paul urged us in Romans 12, to not conform to the pattern of this world. Though we live in this world, yet we are not of this world, therefore our lives should reflect our Heavenly Father.

God is a Holy God and He desires that we His children be holy just as He is. He had chosen us as His own, not because we deserve it but because He loves us dearly.

“For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure. The Lord did not set his heart on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest of all nations! Rather, it was simply that the Lord loves you, and he was keeping the oath he had sworn to your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a strong hand from your slavery and from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.”. (v6-9 NLT)

“Do this because you are a people set apart as holy to God, your God. God, your God, chose you out of all the people on Earth for himself as a cherished, personal treasure. God wasnโ€™t attracted to you and didnโ€™t choose you because you were big and importantโ€”the fact is, there was almost nothing to you. He did it out of sheer love, keeping the promise he made to your ancestors. God stepped in and mightily bought you back out of that world of slavery, freed you from the iron grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know this: God, your God, is God indeed, a God you can depend upon. He keeps his covenant of loyal love with those who love him and observe his commandments for a thousand generations”. (v6-9 MSG)

As we go about our day today, lets ponder on Gods love for us and our response to His love. Lets remind ourselves that God is able to do that which He has promised us. The question is are we willing to take His hand and follow His instructions or we content to keep trusting in our own strength and futile efforts?

Deuteronomy 5 & 6 – Obedience !!!

Good afternoon y’all. Welcome to week 2 of our Deuteronomy study ๐Ÿ™‚

Today i’m doing a combined blog on chapter 5 and 6.

Be blessed ๐Ÿ™‚

One key thing I picked from both chapters is that obedience is paramount to our success here on earth and to living a life that is pleasing to God.

Moses told the Israelites in chapter 5 to be careful to do all that God had commanded them. They were to obey completely, nothing like partial obedience. He also highlights the consequences of their choices…if they obey, they will enjoy the land and if they do not obey, they will loose the land.

So Moses told the people, โ€œYou must be careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your God, following his instructions in every detail. Stay on the path that the Lord your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy”. (Deut 5: 32-33 NLT)

In chapter 6, he reminds them again that obedience to God will result in them enjoying life in abundance and that God should be their sole focus and priority. They are to love him not just in words but by their actions – obedience.

ย โ€œListen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.ย  And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today”. (Deut 6: 4-6 NLT)

Pleasing and obeying God should be at the forefront of all that we do. It should be what drives us and guides our daily life.

Truth is, if we are obedient and willing, we will eat of the good of the land. Its that simple, yet its something that most of us struggle with.

I’ve come to realize that obedience is not for God’s benefit, rather it’s for ours. It doesn’t do anything for Him, and whether we obey or not, it doesn’t diminish who He is as God. However, due to His love for us, and the fact that He wants the best for us, He gives instructions to guide and help us live the abundant life that He has for us.

God is very loving and gracious because He just doesn’t dish out instructions to us and leave us to figure out how to obey. No, He always supplies the grace to obey. We have the Holy Spirit, who is our Helper and Teacher. Scripture says, God has given us everything we need to live a godly life, which implies that we have, within us, all that we need to live an obedient life.

Jesus said if you love me you will obey my commands. This tells me that our obedience is a reflection of our love for God.

How deep is your love for God? Deep enough to obey and love Him wholeheartedly?

As we go about our day, let’s trust God to help us live obedient lives. We can’t obey if we don’t know what we ought to be doing.ย  So let’s also ask God to reveal His plan for us so we can obey Him; and for grace to love Him more because when we love Him, we will obey Him unconditionally.
